I chose the specialty of Otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, when I was a third-year medical student because I wanted to practice many aspects of medicine including surgery, clinical work, and the treatment of all ages and genders. Otolaryngology is one of the few specialties that affords this diversity. My choice has allowed me a career that includes a general otolaryngology practice, as well as the pursuit of more artistic aspects of medicine through my laser and cosmetic practice. I find it rewarding to work with a variety of needs and personalities and I have developed lasting relationships with many patients during my 17 years practicing medicine in the Portland metro area.

Even as I have found meaning and purpose in my medical practice here at home, I have a tremendous desire or "calling" to travel to distant lands where the needs are great. My dream to serve on medical missions first become reality in 2008, when I traveled to Mexico with Dr. David Parsons, a mentor from my residency years. Three years later, I realized another long-term career dream: I traveled to Zambia in April 2011, with Dr. Joe Clawson, who has performed over 2400 cleft lip and palate procedures in his 23 years of international medical mission trips. I traveled to Kenya in October 2011 and returned to Zambia with Dr. Clawson in April 2012.

Sincerely,
Michelle B. Vessely, MD
